Case IH 4230XL stuck in high range

Looking for some help, first off how it happened, cutting hay in high range first gear , stopped to back up and the tractor would not come out of high gear to go to reverse, the speed shifter on the gear handle quit working a few months ago not sure what if it is in high or low. I did not get that one figured out yet. The tractor will still move but only in high range and 1st thru 4th gear. We pulled the seat off to gain access to the linkage but everything appears free .

Long time since we had one but ours did the same thing quite often, one of the linkages just under the sticks in the cab got wedged. Take plastic cover off and look at the linkages, a rod may of gone too far and got stuck. And as for the TA switch, it stops in low if the power feed is lost. Check wires and fuses I'm sure it's nothing serious

If you push too quickly across the ranges the selector can drop out, especially so as the tractor gets older. On earlier models it happened when they were brand new. When changing ratio, be very positive in your action, do not pull diagonally
Sorry not sure of the layout on your tractor to tell how to Put it back

The main issues are as Cowman says, in other words under the gear levers themselves.
Take off the panels & get a look in, in the seat side there's a big Allen bolt that clamps the lever pivots, they get very sloppy with wear, I think this was a 14mm Allen key.
The linkages under the cab were not that much of an issue, but can get tight & sticky.

Was there not something about these shifting into low torque when you put your foot on the clutch to change gear. And this was to allow easier shifting of the range years? An the op says he thinks it's stuck in high??

Yes , quite right ,although I think our 4240 will stick in low if the solenoid gets no current or is goosed

Indeed they will stick in the range box if the TA pressure doesn't dump when the clutch is pressed fully down
But with the engine stopped it should release in this situation.

I've a 585 l cab stuck in low or reverse no high range ime assuming that's linkage related ?
The old 74 series I had used to get both gears at the same time so she locked up , I carried a rod I used to fiddle down through the plate with the slider holes in it , and flick the reverse toggle thing , back out again ,and good to go . A different thing though?

What does it feel like when you try to select high ?
Because if you can select low & reverse ok & it doesn't stall it's not stuck in high. Could be something lose or broken.

It will be a case of having a look under there at the linkage, I'd guess something's dropped off or broken.
If you look above the hydraulic filter you'll be able to see the linkage.
Get someone to move from low to reverse so you know which piece of linkage does what.
There's 2 rods go forward from the linkage, one is low reverse, the other high.

Thanks for all the input it turned out to be the linkage was out of adjustment. Whomever had the tractor before me must of had the cab off and did not tighten the jam nuts up on the linkage, we kept on working on it and it finally popped out, now to get it adjusted properly. The linkage right below the shifter is worn too so that may of had something to do with it. We are going to replace the bushings on the shifter to tighten it up a bit.
