Case IH 956 4wd drive shaft seal repair

Can anyone help me please. I have a Case IH 956 4wd (f reg) that appears to have worn seal in the 4wd drive shaft where it exits the gearbox. I see a cir-clip and a metal shim or spacer, but the shaft moves backwards and forwards by at least half an inch even with these in place, and leaks oil badly when doing so. I have a new oil seal but dont know how to replace the old one as I'm reluctant to pull the 4wd shaft out in case a gear or bearing etc. drops off the end in the bottom of the gear box. Any ideas fellas

The shaft in the transfer box "floats" back & forward a bit, it has to do this as the pinnion shaft on the front axle is fixed.
Just pick out the old seal, clean our any debris & pop in new seal ( provided there's no lift on the shaft )

Thank you very much Gapples, that makes sense now its been explained. I thought the play was gearbox wear but it is not, and that the seal had to be put in from the back, but it sounds much simpler than that. What did we all do for good advice before the internet?

Just by way of an update I have replaced the seal. The shaft came out forwards with the retainer ring intact after removing the cir-clip. Gapples was quite right there was an unholy load of crap between the retaining ring and seal which had either pushed the seal rearwards so it wasnt effective any more or had worn the seals lips. Pulling the shaft out was still a heart in mouth moment as I expected something to drop inside the transfer box, but it didnt. So far so good, thanks Gapples et al. Back to making hay.......

Lost all brakes on 1455

Hi Glasshouse, Im by no means an expert and I am not too familiar with this model but if its like most other case tractors there is a small plastic reservoir holding the brake fluid, Hytran on my 956, which is inf ront of the cab window under the bonnet above the brake cylinders. We did have a smaller case tractor where the reservior was behind the dash inside the cab, so could be either, or neither, but there is sure to be one. My first action would be to check the brake reservoir is full of fluid and it hasnt emptied through a leak somewhere. If this is Ok and fluid is up to recommended level I would then try to bleed the brakes with the help of a mate. I think bleed screws should be on top of rear axle trumpet housings ( look a bit like grease nipples) and they should be bled in the same way as all other tractor hydraulic brakes. Youtube this if you are not sure. Good luck. Ps if ever if becomes surplus to requirements drop me a line, but you will have a queue to buy it.......
