Cast or steel sprocket

Replacing a sprocket on a grain elevator. Got the choice of a steel one that needs machining to the correct shaft size or a cast one with an expanding collar That will fit straight on. Cast one is cheaper. Is there any difference in durability?

what was on it originally?.
what diameter is it and what type of chain

if it was cast then another one wont hurt.
if it was originally steel then there is the possibility it was that for a reason.
the cast one with the expanding collar would be the best quick fit and i cant see any problem really, depending on size and load which im not aware of..

15 teeth on motor Duplex sprocket( new one would be steel) 76 duplex teeth on shaft 1/2 pitch. Motor is about 4.5 kw 1440 rpm (We just use standard 3 phase). Old sprockets were steel 70 teeth and 15 Duplex.

Do you mean you’ve the option between one with a taper lock or one with a hollow bore with key way machined.

if so, then in my experience if it previously had a hollow bore with a big boss, then replacing with taper lock alternative might end up giving you grief as it won’t be as strong.

A cast taper lock will be about £25 and take minutes to fit.

A steel one won't be a lot cheaper but will need centre machining and a key way putting in. That's a pretty specialist job and will cost.

Stick a taper lock on and see how it wears after a season. You'll need to change the chain as well. New chain and cast sprocket will last years

Cast one with taper lock £47. Steel one that needs machining £60.( can get neighbour to machine so no cost there)

taper locks installed properly give little bother. We use them extensively in the quarries.

Tip I learnt is to give the taper lock a good clout with a hammer when installing, it will help seat the taper into the sprocket, ensuring its nice an tight. Keep doing it until the grub screws are FT ?
