Cataracts

Having had a detached retina where the fix is a bit of laser treatment for the tear in the retina plus sucking some of the vitreous jelly out of the eyeball and replaced by a gas bubble to reattach the retina back to where it should be (probably done in the reverse of what I have just written, can't remember), I was given the choice of local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic. Having been told you're getting the jelly sucked out of your eyeball I immediately chose the general anaesthetic (even though the nurse said she would my hand!). Yes, I am a coward! I have a female relative that had the same operation and she had it under a local.
A very common side effect of having eye surgery for a detached retina is getting a cataract so I won't have the option of going under a general anaesthetic the next time.?

Dad had one done at the start of September, went up early in the morning to the hospital in Londonderry and was home just after lunch. Says it is a good job, was badly needed. He had been meant to get it done in Omagh at the start of the summer but they discovered he has a reaction to latex so did in Londonderry instead. Getting the other eye done in February.
He found it bit surreal talking to the staff carrying out the procedure while the work was been done.

As somebody else has done the "gory reveal".......
They incise a small hole, liquify and vacuum out the knackered lens.
They then inject a pre-folded new artificial lens that has two "hooks" to hold it in place.
That is about it...... we do hundreds a week, success rate is around 99.8%.
