Keep an eye on eBay in the USA for parts put in the part number(even old numbers) quite often good prices on buy it now turn up just check delivery costs. new temp gauge old type delivered for £22 plus £4 handling charge.

If you pull the covers off the top just have a look to see if the band is bolted together in three pieces, if so I would have thought it would have come out the top.
You can see the anchor bolts from the top looking down inside

.............and make sure you wind out the bolt in the bottom that keeps the band snug against to drum before you start, just to give plenty of clearance

I dug out the manual today, no specific mention of servicing the brakes separately, just the procedure to R&I the steering clutches with the brakes........and the set-up procedure
