A friend has asked me to make a 10x3ft cattle grid for a front of a house. My head says channel section. What widths / thicknesses have people used? Or alternatives heaviest thing going over it is a Vauxhall estate car

What's a 3ft grid going to stop?
Just for water not for cows anymore. There’s a drain under it, old thing but it needs replacing. Some of those on eBay are hideously expensive for what they are. Don’t mind making them but curious to what profile steel and thickness people use. It’s not for tractors so doesn’t need to be heavy duty

He may only want to get his car over but it’s got to be strong enough for when the heating oil tanker comes and decides it’s easier to drive over screwing his wheels round as he goes etc

Possibly slight overkill for the application but the last one I did was from 100*50*6 box, welded to 100*15 flats. This sat on 4 I beams (it was wide) set into the ground. Between the grid and the beams was a strip of rubber to act as a shock absorber. Still there now 20 years on and forms the entrance to a working farm as well as a farm park...

One critical piece of advice that I was given was to make sure, when installing the grid that it was set slightly lower than the road/ track either side so that traffic is "falling" onto the grid rather than striking it if it was set proud.

Yes I’m using 100x50x6 box but it isn’t the cheapest at nye on 89 a bar. Won’t have an issue with burning through the walls at a decent amperage though 😊
