Anyone got any tips or tricks for marking cattle?

We have several different grouping depending on weight gain and something like a colour code would be very handy
Something more perminant than spray paint but that does not involve tagging.

Reading tag numbers and trying to scrap da sh t off them to read them gets old fast!
I am looking for something this is as permenant as an ear tag but not.

Freeze branding is out.

Is there such a thing as tail bands for example?

Do you want to be able to individually identify each animal? Sounds like it if you need to read tag numbers so would tail bands really work?

If you just need to mark them as members of a certain group than different colour of temple tags, blank ear tags or even brisket tags would work.

If you need individual numbers you can go with hot branding - done this with horses before for identification. Of course freeze branding would be easier to see. There a specific reason that's out?

Want to be able to identify what grouping a calf is in. An animal may move between grouping.
Don't need to identify an individual animal.

Different coloured ear tags for different groups

Probably... Just a shame there is not a product that would picky back on existing I'd tag. But just trying to have my cake and eat it.

@49801 we use these http://www.templetag.com/original.asp Just without the numbers.

It does involve tagging the animal but with all those different colours it easily distinguishes groups and rarely are they so dirty you can't tell what colours which. We tag on the top of the ear towards the outer edge but not so far that the tag can turn and slide down to the bottom of the ear. When applied correctly they rarely fall out or break and I've never seen one ripped out.
