Cereals 2017

flew over and back for the one day. Enjoyed it but stands were commenting that foot fall was down. Suppliers I spoke to were very helpful and plenty of information (one advantage of a smaller crowd I guess). Weather was good and traffic was perfect.
It's hard to keep these things fresh.

I have had a chat with the Show Director of the Lincolnshire show. Openfield is back at the County show and they are hopeful that one or two other merchants will join them. He also said they are full as regards machinery. Which is fabulous as it was always a good agricultural show!! @yellowbelly

How was it for you @Robigus
Having just got back from day one at Cereals I have to say it was a fair disappointment. @CerealsEvent your website for registering free tickets was a disgrace for an event of your size.

The idea that we all walk round with our labels on was a bad joke and like most people I chucked mine in the first bin. It caused not the slightest problem in meeting people or getting information.

Information was a bit thin on the ground as so many of principle exhibitors have pulled out that there was remarkably little worth seeing. Filling the place with land agents hardly makes it worth a visit.

If the original, and better, Sprays and Sprayers was to split off and return to Cambridge in it's old form it would be a much better event.

On the plus side the low turn out did mean it was much easier to get into and there was plenty of room in the car parks.

Even with a free entry it was not worth while. LAMMA and an old school Sprays and Sprayers are what would be the best.

what a rigmarole getting an extra person in early on the first day, totally pointless nearly 20 mins and wasted the advantage of getting up early , seems that system was abandoned later on, said to the guy if I they receive any crap either by email or post will make a conscious effort to find another supplier .
machinery.
most of it too big for our scale of production( 480 acres )and so was of little interest and once youve seen one harrow disc tine roller combination youve seen them all unless working on your patch , as far as the humungeous sprayers go and other gear cant see any of them being used here by me or mine in my remaining time which I hope is decades so they are of more interest to the contractors. The big question for us is do we still plough reap and sow ourselves or get contractors in and stop farming and thats not a decision going to be influenced by a visit here

tech and breeders.
interesting to talk to the plant breeders although the little plots show nothing of real use as not big enough , the chemical boys seem only interested if you are one of the unfortunates with blackgrass and are confinced that grain will be over 200 by xmas to pay for the product . seems to me most are not giving more than a marginal return.
found some of the smaller guys with the foliar feed products interesting but thats my thing at the moment as can see its one of the few ways open to me to improve return/output, and we are looking to improve our sat nav in field system but most are still too expensive or too complicated for our scale.and if another drone comes snooping over me will shoot the bugger down

cant see us selling up or putting the place out to mangement by a member of the yellow trouser brigade yet so that area was not a lot of interest but a drink and a chat with one of the bankers as to their view of current and future ways the countries politics may influence their views on the industry has given me a bit to think about,

we did enjoy the day and met up with folks we hadnt seen for a while both friends and business folk and made several useful contacts , we learnt a bit and have picked up some food for thought ,the question is would we go next year and to be honest if its further away and cant do it comfortably in a 12 hour day to include travel then no and would I want to shell out nearly £100 for tickets for self and co plus other expenses eg travel lost work time etc thinking every other would do or wait until if its nearer to base again

Thought the show has lost its way although I did get to speak to the people I wanted to,won't be going next year unless they change it back to something that ordinary farmers can get benefits from don't get me started on parasite row all their making out they are your friend while sorting out between themselves who's going to get what

it was a rigmarole to get in due to the filling out of a form having already done that on line, however it has just given me a laugh as in the bit where it said company after a long and futile wait for the screen filled in a bogus phrase and have received a contact addressed to what i put which was , ( preferably female ), im still chuckling ,simple things and all that
