Chaff Cutter

Are there any modern versions of the old fashioned chaff cutter. I want to make my own chaff for horses, fed up of buying chaff when I have a barn full of good hay and could make my own.

Thanks Grumps! Just because of the name doesn't really help a lot, ours was a very old and decrepit one that ended in the scrap. However I have an idea that one of the companies tha make kit for smallholders and so on might do one, @Bev have you tried google or eBay?

Would your local contractor throw a few bales through his forage harvester one quiet day for you? Maybe blow it in to a corner. Someone I know did something similar. He made a cage from the steel frame of an IBC container lined with smaller mesh to blow it into.

Set the feed rollers nice and slow and it should make dust of it, I would have thought. Can't see a problem with dry hay. He might not be so keen if it was wet grass.

sadly local contractors aren't that obliging. I am not sure a garden shredder will work, I could perhaps try borrowing one first, shredding is a bit different to chopping I think?

If it's conventional bales of hay would putting it through one of those small straw choppers chop it up enough?
we use to have a push along small bale straw chopper with a petrol engine,I use to put small bales off hay through it for my sisters horse it would make a good job off it
we have sold it now I think it made about £200

Thanks guys, when I saw your posts about straw choppers I searched for one of those instead of "chaff cutter" and have found what looks like a great petrol engine one that should do the job nicely.
