Know a tree surgeon who had new big saws that only ever got used two or three times a year,,he sold them and bought an ex mod husky 288 for next to nothing ,,its an animal ,,put a 32 inch bar on it ,nothing stops it
I did borrow one of those once (I think it was a 288 anyway). Starting it was.......challenging.......

Funny

Funny that a mate bought the exact same saw from the states, fecking animal of a thing. Only thing we can put it down to is the silencer or lack of, it's bloody loud.
Maybe there's less restriction in them. Any saw I buy here, the first thing I do is open up the silencer box and give them more vent makes a world of difference.EU emissions rules bugger saws IMHO. Also those electronic carbs need to be buried in big wood for a start, seems to help keep them right.(y)
local saw guy selling a lot of echo saws because they have none of that electronic crab rubbish , happy with my echo but don't do a lot

Have been using saws on and off for nigh on fifty years.
I did actually have a couple of spells totalling probably ten years of full time timber felling, forest thinning and coppice work.
Whatever saw you buy, I would strongly recommend that you take the professional variant as opposed to the hobby or economy versions, to make sure you get real and full on anti vibration spec.

When I bought mine I was told the Stihl MS170 won't fell trees as the chain & bar are too thin and get pinched. Only use for pruning etc. However doing it the right way (cutting wedges) I've felled trees with mine. That said my main saw is a 14" Einhell I bought from Argos for £80 many years ago. New chain and bar every couple of years and some TLC and so far it has gone on forever.

I have an Einhell which has done quite a bit of work over the last few years. Good spares service from them as well when I had to replace the brake handle after it was broken in a fall down the slope.

I think the problem with battery saws s always going to be the recharge time. It's alright if you are super organised and have it all set up but with a petrol machine, as long as you have a can of 50:1 and a can of oil, you can go all day. Haven't really looked into it but I suspect we are still some way off the battery tech that would make this realistic. ie you can plug in 1 or 2 batteries and they will last you a full days cutting. It will happen I suspect.

Second vid is impressive. I use an electric saw on one of those saw horse things where the saw is fixed and it's very good for that. No energy used while you are picking up the next billet or clearing logs.

Got a mains bosch saw, cuts at half the chain speed of a stilh 170
and softly built. Good thing is it always goes, will run happily off a genny. which i often take along together with a chopsaw for smaller stuff.
Just wish they would come out with a standard battery

50 mins is not long enough though is it? You could have a couple or 5 and charge them from solar but I wonder how cost effective it is really. You can chuck a couple cans of 50:1 in the truck but you can't fill it with electric.

That's free running time.
ie.. just the chain wanging round and cutting nowt.
With the top 4.2Ah battery @ £205 including vat, would it cut as much timber as £205 worth of 50 to 1 before it was knacked? That's without charging or charger costs.
