Chalk beds for Hfrs

When I was a child we had a couple of sheds with hard-beaten chalk floors, one was for machinery and the other had stores in. It was a whole shed, not cubicles, and my father put straw down because we had it; because the straw was there and because the floor was rammed solid there was never a problem clearing up once they were turned out. We had chalk on the surface in a couple of places on the land so it was a cheap way of doing things; but it was concreted after I left home, straight on to the chalk I think.

If you have access to enough chalk, and it's free or cheap, you'd be daft not to give it a go. But you must whack it in hard and put enough topping on before they first go onto it, or they'll churn it up and create a hell of a mess. Please let us know how you get on if you give it a go.

does anybody have experience of bedding Hfrs on chalk cubicles topped with sawdust ??
I have put 8 inches of well whacked chalk on top of a membrane, on top of a foot of hardcore, on top of a membrane, straight on the subsoil and it does stand nice and dry, I put straw on it though as I have some.
