Cheap EID Readers

There is a chinese company making and selling EID stick readers, I never investigated the cost, as for my very modest need, there seemed little point. They did offer a deal on multiple units though...

Later...

bet they wont offer a task option / upload right into yer sheep program .??
its so practically useful to be able to just tap a button few times and link lambs to mothers and other info at birth out in the yard /shed/field ....ping and its filed nicely ..
same with weights or meds.....

It will depend on teh software people are using I guess.

You can't leave it at that! More details needed I think....

I contacted Peter Zhou and had a conversation, and put in an Order, despite the protestations from the "Importers". VERY competitive price for a DIY install kit.

I went and saw one that was fitted and running very successfully in South Shropshire, before biting the bullet.

Cheap enough to give it a try, but too dear for it if it turns out to be wrong, at the same time.
And you need to find 4 others prepared to take the same gamble...

I'd say the cheapest readers you can buy here won't be a lot dearer (and they come with software and are printer compatible etc)

That’s what putting me off saying I’ll throw in for 1! Add just a bit more and you get a tried and proven model…

I am thinking that myself....

But 25quid as a punt on my OP is a different matter. :)

Have got one like the OP. Paid about £25 for it too and works grand, but some foibles and doesn’t like some tag types. From memory, we get simplex and duplex tags in sheep and it reads one but not the other.

Used it for a few years and managed okay, had to specify the right kind when buying tags and had a few issues with bought in sheep (so don’t bother getting one @Anymulewilldo ).

Got a Shearwell stick on the grant this year and so old machine is relegated to cat and dog checks.

If your reading batches of lambs, stick reader is a must and the longer the better. A lot quicker than something you need to get your hand near their heads.

Shearwell have a free app that you can Bluetooth the numbers to and email them to where ever you want and print

My batches tend to be modest, so even a hand reader in a race would be better than catching and hand reading. In theory, the mart sends the EID details, but it is not infallible!

Bought a tru-test ERS reader last year for £300 ish thought I was doing the right thing and it would make life a lot easier, it doesn’t scan half the tags, the other half it reads twice, it has to be touching the tags pretty much too read them… then it takes half hour too load it up and print the tag list up on the laptop.. it’s just totally sh!t… isn’t too bad if you put 5 sheep in the race and read them all 1 at a time then if it doesn’t scan write that one down but takes forever….

looking at changing too a panel reader for the race or a decent stick reader atm

shearwell stick reader doesnt do anything other than read and send and it will break , the end that screws on is a weak point if youre not very careful how you screw it on when changing the batteries.
as the batteries have to be taken out to charge as there's no port.
also in comparison those Agrident readers are modern lithium type batteries which last longer and are lighter .

one of those i mentioned above will ( in continuous read) , read as fast as you can get to those ears, and shove back in your pocket as quick as youre thinking where to put the stick reader one while you open gates etc.

Having a handpiece that will at least link births to ewes there and then is an must have i reckon, and if it can record weights with auto input from a weigh head than it will be at least three times more useful to most breeding flock keepers than just a basic chip reader.
medicine use on a task option is particularly good for a 'one off' ab use, as said above with the reader in your pocket as you jab, and after record , job done.
up load to computer indoors for record book etc , like the bloke said on the fast show get this modern stuff right and .... "its brilliant"
