Claydon Opinions

Looking at changing drill at the moment and the claydon is one of the options not entirely convinced to that we want to be jumping straight into direct drilling rightly or wrongly so would be using it as a conventional tine drill at the same time how well do the new hybrid drills deal with min tilled land in wet conditions as I've heard a few reports of them blocking when the stubble is fluffy or is there enough clearance between the tines to stop this happening ?

No experience with a Hybrid but our SR has plenty of room between the legs (even drill maize stubble with lodged maize still on) and it coped fine!
The problem you may have could be the following harrow dragging trash,(but you'd get that with most drills), you'd probably overcome this by reducing the pressure on it.

You need to decide whether you want to no till or strip till. A claydon is a strip till so on the right (very nice soils) all your doing is eradicating a cultivation pass which lets say costs you £20/ac and you average 3.5t/ac (wheat) meaning the cultivation pass is saving you £6/t.

If however you go proper no till then you will possibly see savings in herbicides which you will not see under a strip till system because to much soil is disturbed.
