Cleaning 1000L IBC

We have some empty 1000L IBCs sitting around the yard which previously contained engine oil. Am I mad to try and consider washing them out to fill with drinking water for sheep?

We have a hot wash power hose on the farm to get started and I’ve watched some videos on YouTube suggesting washing detergent and fairy liquid will wash it clean after a few fills and empties.

Anyone else tried cleaning IBC which had oil in the then?

You can get IBC cleaning nozzles to go on the steam cleaner. Some come attached to the lid or maybe you could put one on the Lance and poke it through?

Not sure I’d be so keen on fairy to be honest, might be worth trying to get some milk machine cleaner from somewhere and recycle it back to the washer ...... no foam then.

Edit: dishwasher tablet would be good too but remember both are very hard on aluminium so rinse machines very well afterwards.

If they’ve been stood a while and then propped with the fall to the outlet they shoukd be faurly empty and clean if it was bew oil?

Then just pressure washer and sone detergent, you then just heed the dirty washings to go through sone form of trap to contain the oil spills.

Would you fancy drinking water out of them?

I wasted hundreds of gallons trying to wash the likes of shower gel crap out of them waste of ti me as well.
Also
Clear ones allow algae to grow from the sunlight passing through couple of days in the warm and sun and the water is crap again

There are better types of tank for stock drinking water .

Which tanks would those be? :cautious::shifty: Or is it secret ? :smug:
Well maybe paint clear ones or something to keep the light out and try cleaning with the likes of all clear

I just find it a pita they wont empty out totally when you rinse them etc....

Ex Orange juice would be the exception ....could lick them clean :ROFLMAO::unsure:

Ps just had to Google what ibc is short for :D

New oil will wash out no problem heat and detergent, getting the top clean will be the hardest bit

Yeah it’s new oil that was in them and they are just sitting empty at the minute. Be nice to find a use for them because we have some remote fields with no mains water. I’ll try the water out of them before I make sheep drink it!:ROFLMAO:

Get yourself some chlorine tablets off that well known internet auction site and chlorinate the water to prevent algae etc and keep any nasties down

So I attempted washing the ex engine oil IBC. Hot wash and dish wash detergent x 3 fills and 3 hot rinses and I’m hoping we have a clean IBC and clean water....
