whats the best one to use that can snyc between windows pcs, android phones and iphones? Have been using dropbox sucessfully for a number of years, but thay have just cut the number of linked devices to 3, plus we have been getting near the 2 gig data limit. To carry on with dropbox wewould have to pay for the service which is £95/yr. Do we just go for that and carry on with dropbox or are there better/cheaper ones?

Cheers joe.

You could always go down the Office 365 personal route. £59.99 year for 1TB OneDrive cloud storage. You will also ensure you get up to date Office programmes.

Or the Office 365 Home for 6 people for £79.99 year, which has 1TB per user.

Decided to just cut back to 2 computers and my phone as linked devices and make do with the basic free version.

I have a home version of MS office and use the MS One drive cloud that's included , you have to renew it yearly but there is usually deal on amazon for around £40 yr that gets you outlook , word excel and one drive for up to i think ts 4 users and maybe 4 devices each .
I love the ability to have the docs anywhere , home, work , lap top , tablet even a phone super simple to use you just use it as part of your PC memory
I perhaps un wisly never back it up trusting MS to be more safe with my data then i would be my self , but its worth every penny i would highly recommend it .

Does anyone use google drive, Is the security good?

Anything Google or MS or Apple offer will have serious security behind it. The weakest point will be the user themselves: weak passwords or poor online security on their own machine. No hacker will brute force even a hotmail account these days because of the security involved.

Any tips on security if I want say 5 or 10 individuals to be able to access it?

I was going to change the password every year.

I'm not sure about exactly how Google drives works but in Microsoft's OneDrive you can put whatever you like into your personal cloud space but only share the files you want to share. Each user would have their own (1TB from memory but you can opt for more) cloud space but shared files can be worked on collaboratively, even in real time with more than one user working on the file. OneDrive cleverly keeps 'previous versions' which is a bit like an on-going backup and I understand there are ways of protecting the files (I think you can set what permissions a user of that file or folder can do with it). I would assume Google drive provides similar features but I have never used it. I understand the the files/folders on Google drive ultimately belong to the 'owner' which is the person who first uploaded it?

I actually found OneDrive a lot nicer to use than dropbox just because it dovetails into Windows better.

Depending on the nature of the files you intend to store and what software is involved to work on them you may need to explore third party solutions. Of course, any cloud type system relies on reasonable internet access for all parties.

Thanks for the advice. My main concern is that one of the participants would get a key logger or a Trojan and give over the password.
I would change the password every year. All participants need to see all files.

Password change is not often enough at a yearly, I would do monthly.
Very easy to do just by changing a number up each month ie MyPassword01 becomes MyPassword02 in February. Many possible variations along that theme, make the number be the number of letters in that month etc etc

You may need to find a business IT consultant or similar to advise on this. As I said earlier, with OneDrive, only the 'owner' of a file can delete it. Previous versions are automatically kept. A keylogger or similar on another worker's machine cannot delete the file and all edits are backed up in previous 'versions'.
