Collars

It’s the dairy event at Shepton mallet on Wednesday.
We are looking for some collar pedometers for serving cows. Not really interested in a seg gate.
Any recommendations for whose stands to visit ?
Many thanks lazy.

Do you graze any distances from the farm with them ?
Far enough to be out of range. The info updates when the cows are in for milking. I normally give it 10 - 15 minutes to catch up and check it before the first side leaves the parlour. I think you can get a longer range antenna but didn't look into it as cows come in twice a day anyway.

I’ve two solar paddock antennas with cow manager here, bit of a moot point weather they’re necessary or not, as mentioned above the cows are in range of the base station twice a day. My only negative feedback from cow manager is that the sensor life is not great, I think they said 5 years and on current evidence we’ll be.lucky if any make it that far. They replace them as part of the subscription but that’s kind of not the point.

Been told that datamars has one of if not the quickest downloads on the market
If it picks them up from 500m away by the time they've got to the parlour they are on a list
Allowing for 10% lost tags both datamars and cowmanager are very similarly priced over 5 years although after 10 years cowmanager are slightly cheaper

I think as a spring block calver you need to only listen to spring block calvers recommendations.

It's all to do with how quick the data is available at milking.

Your farm is relatively level a high enough farm antenna might suffice. My cow manger will see beyond 800m with direct line of sight.

If cows are in blind spots you either need mobile antennas or for a fellow spring calver to confirm upload will be quick enough for 250 plus cows to have data available when you want it.

In the midst of calving I also wouldn't want to be without rumination but the rest of the year tend to ignore it. It's amazing what a drench and a jab of metacam will do to a cow that you might not notice to be off by eye.

We've got Datamars. Developed in NZ and perfect for grazing. As long as there's not a hill in the way they pick up the cows. Brilliant back up as well.

Datamars here aswell, brilliant system, they are developing it all the time aswell, can have mix of tags and and or collars aswell, and they can be turned off when your not using them

The way I worked it out, the cowmanager would cost quite a bit more over 5 years. But would be still under warranty
