Hi there I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations for above. I have an aging 955 with a worn concave. Rasp bars are fine but have been putting the evil day off for a while now.

It rather depends on how much you want to spend, if the concave is bowed at all I'd replace it with a reconditioned one ( if available )
If bowing from edge to center is minimal & wear wasn't to bad I'd take a grinder to the bars & flatten then again, provided there is plenty of adjustment.

Off topic but whatever happened to nicolson concaves? Their high performance ones were all the rage 20 years ago. And did they work?

Dont have experience of Nicholson, got a Loewen one in the 98, that Combine Fabs wanted rid of; about twice as heavy and strong as the original.

We fitted a Nicholson to our 1075 in about 1996. It's still in there and has minimal wear and no bowing. The combine can be worked harder ad it is kinder to the straw. I have no idea why they aren't more popular, but I imagine that the manufacturers are now incorporating their ideas into the latest machines.

Combine Fabs do their own version now made from Hardox.

The 5 walker version of those old deeres may have be better for being narrower, but the standard concaves in the 6 walker 985 and 1085 we had were prone to bowing. My father replaced the one in the 1085 with a heavy duty aftermarket which seemed to cope a lot better. I can't remember who made it now, but pretty sure it wasn't a Nickolson.

Bought a concave off Combine Fabs. First experience, top class blokes to deal with.

Next question concave comes out the back, sieves and riddles out, leave the walker's in or out?

Well that's handy, maybe I wasn't listening to the oul boy then. He mentioned something about taking something out the back. Wires crossed perhaps.
put the header on the front and on level concrete place header on floor
get blocks and a jack and take the weight of the back of the feeder house(trunk)
undo the 2 pins on the bearings that the trunk pivots and reverse the combine back

not a very big job(y)

I often took the elevator trunk off of my Deutz Fahr 2680 with the JCB and the pallet forks. Put the forks under the front, angle back, belt off and pins out. Unfortunately, the stoney land on my former farm frequently caused damage to the elevator chain. Changing the elevator slats was easy also.

There was a new concave for 5 Walker JD combines up to the 1177 on a Facebook selling group yesterday in central Scotland, if anyone wants I can try and find a link.
