Combine straw choppers

It is often said that a good chop and spread of straw and chaff is essential with no-till, and negates the need for a straw harrow. My current lexion 570 has a power spreader, but it has been the most troublesome part of the whole combine. I'm contemplating trading it for either another lexion or possibly a New Holland CR, can I get away with a standard straw chopper, or is the power spreader essential? What have other DDers found?

Personally I'd go for a premium chop chopper, razor it all to dust so it breaks down faster, also find a chaff spreader that you can either spread or blast chaff through the chopper useful.

Whichever type check its been setup correctly. Our currect combine (conventional chopper) had the fins swaped around by a previous owner and it took a while to twig why it wasn't spreading well.

My Advanced Power Cast spreader on my John Deere S690i is appalling. It will throw straw 35 feet but most is in the centre despite the wagging spout. I'm glad I don't chop much. I had to rake up & round bale some spring barley straw this summer because we couldn't cultivate it.
