Communication

This is a post I made regarding retail security. The same principle applies, regardless of industry.

Communication. Verbal Communication and Non-Verbal Communication.

The language used, the terminology applied (including job titles), the conduct and demeanour, the methods of protecting staff and property, and treating criminals like victims of society all scream "meek".

There is negligible deterrent from being "meek". The Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication emanating from retailers informs criminals "I'm vulnerable".

Retailers have a responsibility to keep staff and customers safe.

Taking an insurance compliant tick box approach to security is irresponsible, and impractical.

If retailers are truly serious about keeping staff and customers safe, then hiring one security guard is completely unprofessional, and has unrealistic expectations.

For criminals to take retail security seriously, the retailers have to take their own security seriously.

Start by not placing one guard in vulnerably dangerous situations against violent offenders, and requiring untrained, unqualified, unlicensed, uninsured 'have a go hero' staff behaving unlawfully.

What 'signals' - communication and non verbal communication - do you and your property send out?

Do you have good housekeeping, does it looked cared for, does your security look serious or weak?

Do you send out signals of ownership, effective security; or vulnerable?

Will criminals be challenged and have a difficult time achieving their aims; or will it be easy and effortless?

These are questions to ask yourself!!
