Do you ever get vet students, or hired in lambing help ?
I’ve had a student the last 3 years , and I’m done with them .
All keen , but not enough common sense . I can’t be bothered any more nannying them . The latest kept looking at her watch .
It’s only 10 minutes since you last looked , ffs.
Oh I’m reading a text message !
Eh ?🤷‍♂️
Some fancy i phone watch apparently , totally beyond me !🤦‍♂️
In 30 years we’ve only ever sent 1 student home as being totally useless. I had 2 from Harper Keele 3 years ago who were thick and not over keen on work. Treated them accordingly and didn’t bother paying them. But we have between 3 and 6 every lambing and we’d be lost without them. Plenty of them come back a second year, in fact all this years are returns from last year. I have found the girls to be much better workers on the whole than lads. I don’t do nannying, I give orders once, possibly twice then throw them in at the deep end and watch what happens.

Yet I must have been lucky, one of my mates was saying last night out of 3 that arrived this year he sent one home after 2 days as being totally useless and idle, while the other 2 were absolutely brilliant.

I think you can pretty much tell which vet students are going to be professional flea powder applicators or those who will manage to saw a calf in half to get it out just by how pasty their skin is, how blue their hair is & how much metal is sticking out of their faces🤷‍♂️

We used to get students fairly regularly from the Dick vet in Edinburgh as it’s only 35 mins up the road, but stopped when we went outdoors lambing . Last 2 we had were rubbish. One only lasted 3 days. Apparently she wasnt put on this earth to carry buckets and fill hay haiks🤔🤔🙄🙄🔫🔫

We have a vet as a neighbour who we are friends with she was keen to get us some student vets as night lambers the mrs wasn’t liking the idea. She spends more time lambing than I do so I didn’t push the matter by rocking the boat. I didn’t think it was a bad idea at the time but it was probably the right decision not to have any looking back. We are fairly swift in our process and having someone in the way that isn’t doing much would probably have resulted in them being flipped in. My thoughts were they could pen up sheep through the night but they’ve lambed fairly fast and we’ve had a lot of ewes taking lambs off what has lambed before they have lambed if you follow what I mean. What I’m saying is you need someone who can figure out what’s what and know who belongs to who and what’s lambed and what hasn’t. I often spend a few minutes looking at which lambs belong to which ewes someone naive can sharp have a hell of a muddle going.
The last lass spent most of her time standing about doing nowt and gelded some BFL tup lambs so you can imagine how that went 🤓

I should think of some muppet gelded YMs stud ram lambs there would be physical violence, crutch or no crutch.
