After some sixty years, Neil has decided to move on from Longtown Mart giving a younger generation the freedom to drive forward the ever-expanding business.
His contribution has been tremendous and we thank him for all his work in establishing Longtown as the country`s premier sheep sales centre.
His retirement from C & D Auction Marts Ltd is effective from 14th April and our office, auctioneers, field-officers and directors will continue to welcome all enquiries and to meet the needs of our sellers and buyers alike.
Strange move , must have been a falling

Sixty years! Never been to Longtown but I can see why people say the place won't be the same without him.

It's not been that bad here actually despite the rain and cold were coming to the end of the first cycle so not many had lamjed. What had lambed were ok apart from one twit bitch pansy of an old ewe who should know better. She stole a lamb that is a day or two old somewhere, some time in the night. She lambed herself and now doesn't want the stolen lamb and one of her own has chilled. Can't find the stolen lambs mum so now that is going to be a pet. That's pretty standard stuff tbh but the bitch would not be caught 🤬 f**ked about for ages trying to catch her properly but she is a flighty f**king stupid thing like she had never seen a quad or human or lamb before. 🤦🤬
Ended up chasing her down with the quad into a corner and did think for a minute do I run the twit over or try and catch her... jumped on her and we both slid into the fence. Ouch. Tried/struggled/swore a lot to put her in the trailer and she just kept trying to run out before I had a chance to close the ramp 🤦🤬 she nearly escaped a few times I ended up closing the ramp and lifting the bitch in over the top. Then she kept trying to jump out and I had to tie her legs 🤦🤬
She's in a single pen now with a hurdle tied on top to stop the bitch escaping I've even closed the shed door in case she break something and escapes again.
Who's betting I find her hanging from a back leg when I go back after 🙄
Not felt so incompetent in a while 🙈

I don’t think Longtown realise the hole he will leave . If it’s amicable, then it’s all good, but if he felt he had to walk , then it’s a poor reflection on 60 years effort!
Don't know the guy but 60years is a fair long time how old is he? I'd be retiring after that length of time.

Nothing lasts forever either so maybe management were thinking it's time for the young guns to really earn their keep.though they maybe could of done it in a better way.

Worst lambing weather in a long time. Rain rain rain and we're having high winds too

Sheep are lambing ok and the lambs are getting through it alright. Lost a couple of half twins after a few days old but being hill sheep, probably shouldnt of been tupped in the first place and a real lack of grass Its not got me too down.

In fairness I think we've had pretty good April's for the last 5/6 years, we were certainly due a bad one.

Setting a brake for the early lambers. Lambing is suppose to start 7 days from now, yet 60 ewes have had lambs. Those little f**kers. The weather has been mixed with a little bit of everything except snow.

Average night time temps are around 40F. Soil temp is trying to get to 50F but we have days when the air temp is 50F.

Normally you’d retire but this is sticking two fingers up at them, must have been a fall out because he’d have taken a back seat and become a fieldsman.

A legend of an auctioneer,I could never tell if he way saying thirty or forty though, hard work when your trying to buy/rob stiff legged blackies.😂

I remember when himself and Tucker Armstrong and the fellow Fischer used to come up to Inverness in the springtime and buy thousands of hoggs to take south. That would have been late seventies early eighties.
