Cost of Maize drilling ?

£14-£18 an acre depending on who is doing it.

I would sooner pay for someone experienced who isn't trying to drill 200 acres a day at 20 km/h whilst leaving the seed on the surface 90% of the time. Of all the crops I have seen drilled, maize always seemed to be the one with the most horrific drilling job which is alarming considering the seed cost is basically double what cereals cost. I should have taken photos.

One nugget had drilled a customers maize at about 3 inches deep and it took an eternity to emerge. Maybe if you were in a low rainfall area and on sand or something I could see the point, not the ass end of Somerset where it rains for fun virtually all year round.

And the people who insist on doctoring their drills so they can drill faster, then wonder why the seeds don't get metered out smoothly, instead of: A.A.A.A.A.A you get: AAA.......AA....AAA...A....AAA you get the picture.

Use DAP at 40-50kg/acre as starter, not umostart or physiostart or whatever they call it now. Don't forget your pre-em herbicide. (y)
