cost of running a wagon

Obviously a few of you on here run lorries of various sizes, does anyone have reasonably accurate costs for running a medium sized rigid, possibly running with a drag? I think they'd be looking at an 18t flat rigid with hiab type affair. Potentially running with a flatbed trailer.

It's not going to be run by me, but I've said I'd ask on here for an idea of costs, the wagon wouldn't be running every day but would be crucial to the business.

The business currently has several qualified fitters etc, could they do their own 6 week checks or would it have to be done by a HGV garage?

what I'm looking for I suppose is a ppm cost for when the wheels are turning, the drivers would be guy's currently employed by the company who when not driving would be employed doing other stuff, obviously the cost of road tax, insurance etc would be a known fixed cost..

Any ideas?

ppm will vary wildly depending on hwo many miles you do. Would be better to do an annual cost then fuel in ppm. That way you can work out how much work you need to justify it. Its probably more than you think, need to spend a lot of time working to keep a load on in every journey

if they have a suitable workshop pit or lifts that vosa are happy with then yes you can do your own maintenance

Why a Hiab? :scratchhead:

The cost of getting everyone a Hiab ticket could be prohibitive?

A hiab type crane would be needed as the loads will need to be lifted independently as there may not always be other means of loading on site.
They use a haulier at present but the volume of work may rise significantly in the near future and so they are looking into running their own lorry, the loads are always the same type of equipment, from the same handful of locations all over the country and are time critical, the cost of training 3 or 4 guys isn't really an issue.

The RHA publish cost tables which might be a useful start point. They are "members only" but you might find someone who'll share, there's a few older ones online.
