We put in a mix of phacelia and spring oats worked well for us for 5 years now. Uncontroversial with other crops on rotation, cheap, simple and easy to establish and destroy.

I would get some cereals in there as you're going to a broadleaf. You will be amazed at what spring oats can do in that time; and as many different non legume species as you can find cheaply, like linseed and mustard for a start.

There’s a couple people up here the one who had the weavils is one and there’s another in holderness this season

Black oats regularly showed a benefit to the peas. Don't see why ordinary oats shouldn't also.
There was evidence that too much radish could exacerbate footrot issues.

Put some black oats, phacelia and radish in on one block and conventional spring oats, radish and phacelia on another block.

From the pgro work and the work done up here in east York’s be careful with radish before peas some can exaserpate foot root whereas others can reduce it. As always there’s radish and radish.
