Covid-19 mart rules: ‘The industry cannot afford to get this wrong’

NSA Scottish Region is calling on buyers, sellers and hauliers using livestock marts to ensure strict compliance to Covid-19 guidelines as the industry heads into the busy autumn sale period.

NSA Scottish Region chairman Jen Craig said: “The Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland (IAAS) have done amazing work to ensure markets remain open and have provided risk assessments and protocols to keep everyone safe.

There are still many sales to come in the next couple of months and it would be incredibly disappointing if the actions of a few were to cause serious repercussions for others and the markets themselves.

“Our thanks must go to Neil Wilson and everyone else at IAAS for all the hard work they have done and will continue to do during this time to allow us all to continue as normally as possible.

“I would implore everyone to adhere to the rules – the industry cannot afford at this critical stage to get this wrong.”

Latest Covid-19 rules for Scottish marts


In Scotland, all sales of livestock are now permitted.

However, only one vendor per consignment is allowed at ringside to see their stock sold. All sellers will be asked to exit the market as soon as that has happened.

Pre-sale viewing for buyers can be implemented where possible to allow buyers the opportunity to view stock before sales commence. However, this must be in a controlled manner.

It is also recommended that customers wear face coverings in enclosed areas of the markets in line with the requirements on public transport and shops.

An auctioneer can advise and cajole, but he is not going to upset his buyers (or sellers) by telling them what to do. Far too used to being in a huddle around a Ring...
