When putting collars on cows is it best to have the side numbers loose or buckled so they are firm on the strap and higher up, what the best ?
It depends what you're putting on the collar. If it's just numbers you might find the collar and numbers move round the neck. If you've a transponder on there then we would usually say to lock them on so they are the right height. When putting collars on cows is it best to have the side numbers loose or buckled so they are firm on the strap and higher up, what the best ?
Last winter there were 3 incidents with cow collars on a farm I work on. One cow got her collar hung up on a head stall on the feed barrier and hung herself, another 2 got hung up on other things but were luckily caught in time. Would it be possible to fit some sort of breakaway clasp to cow collars that if they got hung off something they were released? Horse lead ropes sometimes have a clip that comes apart if the horse puts a lot of pressure on it, surely there could be something similar that "broke" when the cows weight (or a lot of it) was on it?
