Cow with swollen nose

So this is my first post on the forum after joining a few weeks ago. And I have been enjoying reading a whole host of threads but didn't think my first post would be about this.

Went to check the suckler cows this morning and found a heifer with a swollen nose/cheek and runny eyes she Was fine yesterday

Got her in and phoned the vet who came out and had a look and tried to drain off some fluid but there was none and the swelling is rock hard. Thinks she may possibly have an infection of some sort but didn't seem overly sure.

4 day course of antibiotics and see how she goes was the advice

Anyone else seen this before?

Hopefully I've managed to attach a photo!!

I asked if he thought she may be contagious but he said no. I've isolated her now anyway as a precaution. No others are showing signs at the moment so hopefully he's right.

Not yet. We'd let her out of the crush to pd another Cow as he was there before I thought about it. I asked if he though it might be an idea to do a blood test just to be safe but he said see how she gets on with the course of antibiotics first

A lot of that crap and the blood coming from her nose was caused when I had hold of her nose for him to have a look in her mouth. I should of insisted on a blood test though!

A snake bite crossed my mind. Haven't seen any around but you never know.
Vet asked was there any chance she could of eaten Any unusual plants but as far as I know the fields are clean.

I did, years ago when working on another farm have a calf penned indoors that had a bad face swelling. The vet concluded a b ee or wasp sting reaction. Swelling went down after a day or so.

It looks like an allergic reaction to me. Used to get this with one cow who was allergic to hay. One dose of antihistamine used to sort her out for the whole winter, dont know why. I would try getting some antihistamine in her and see what happens.

Looks like she is photosensitive. Keep her in doors , has skin started to peel off her nose or back? It's caused by eating some plant that they are allergic to. Always get a couple here every year.

No skin peeling off any where. It has gone down slightly today but the rest of the swelling is rock hard and doesnt give at all if you press it. Going to see how she is in the morning and call the vet again if no change.
