Crazy trial - faba beans & field peas

Ok, while drinking a few night ago and researching faba bean fertiliser etc...I had a crazy idea...which I reckon was born from the peola concept.

Why not plant field peas (standing variety) with faba beans? I'm not moisture limited and the peas over here grown on f**kall...there is alot of space left over when growing beans, they are easily separated in the grain cleaner...it would help reduce weed pressure...

I was thinking of doing like 10sqm for a laugh..

Am I wasting my time? Does anyone see any issues? I don't get any chocolate spot but if I did would the chemical hurt the peas? Ripening should be the same...I normally desiccate anyway....

Any ideas welcome...ill founded and non factual based are most welcome!!

Ripening would be the issue here, beans are a lot later to harvest than any peas, and that would include peas planted a month later than the beans. Apart from that I don't think you'd have issues growing them, separating them, our beans can be quite small some years so would end up with some beans in the peas I guess.

BS, ok well I will trial and see how they go, never grown peas so will see if I can get a long season one that might go close.

The faba's beans I grow are a large style seed, I think avg is 14mm...anything that grades out I can sell to locals for more than what I'd get for the premium product!!

since the fert demand is similar it's more disease sprays I guess I'm wondering about...

I like trials...makes life interesting when I come home from the mine it's great to have something different to look at..

Peas ability to survive in severe wet weather maybe another area they come unstuck...I'd only do this on some hill country...

would not the small beans get in with the peas ?? and be hard to dress out would be my thought would depends on end use i guess .. i would also wonder how settings on the header would work might lose beans or have a bit more larger chaff due to the mixed crops
not sure just putting it out there for someone to think over

Threshing speed and fan is similar for peas and beans...sieve settings maybe be a drama....separating won't be an issue...the peas will go as pig feed...the beans for Arabic market or lamb fattners....

I can sell a fair whack of waste grain at same price as export price....

I wonder if the peas being at a lower level when flowering will draw the beans down into the crop better ??

Looks like I will give this a shot on a very small scale

Make sure you take plkenty of photos for us. I reckon it should work well and will have less disease pressure?
