How should labour mps respond to Mrs May’s offer of £1.6 billion over 7 years for “left behind” areas of the country? Personally I think they should take a leaf out of the DUP’s book and treat it as an opening offer.

Maybe everyone should consider that the UK's allocation under EU cohesion funding would be €13 billion compared with £1.6 billion under the PM's proposed Stronger Towns Fund both over 7 years. More sunny uplands.

Is that another example of the EU giving us back some of our own money?

Well duh! Of course it is. That's how belong to a 'club' works - you pay in and you get out though calling it 'ours' and 'theirs' misses the point. UK is the lowest per capita contributor.

Lowest of the whole 28 members?
It is 'our' money we give it to 'them' and then 'they' decide how much 'we' get back and what 'we' can spend 'their' money on- great 'club' to be in!!

Not my quote but interesting!
"Official figures explain that the annual net cost to the UK being in the European Union is £8.1 billion. Whereas the size of the annual subvention to Northern Ireland is a whopping £9.2 billion. It costs more for Northern Ireland to be within the UK than for the UK to be in the EU!"

Interesting figures. I wonder if that includes the £1 billion bung to the DUP?

Northern Ireland residents contribute to the UK treasury in the form of tax though, so for fairness you would need to quote the net contribution of the UK to NI?

I think that is already taken into account as seen here from 11 years ago.

"According to Oxford Economics, in the financial year 2006/07 Northern Ireland paid £11.5 billion into the national accounts and received £18.7 billion out, for a net 'cost' of £7.2 billion to the rest of the UK."

In fact that figure is NET deficite after eliminating NI contributions to the treasury.
Does not include Teresa May’s bung to the “loyal”, DUP
Does probably not include the DUP corruption in the ash for cash funny business.:cautious:
Nobody knows what the DUP did with the “black money” bung from Saudi Arabia ... questions, questions, questions ......:oops:

However, we do know what they did with the Kremlin money they received.

You will notice that I did ask for the net contribution of the UK to NI so I know there is a deficit (thanks to @Muck Spreader for answering).
The bung from TM was part of a negotiation to secure DUP support so that a government could be formed.
What is the true cost of cash for ash? A fair % is bound to end up back with HMRC in the form of income tax receipts?
I have no idea of what they did with Saudi, Russian or Paisleys money, I suspect something similar to most other political parties in the country.

I think the DUP was just used as a money laundering channel to move it into the England for the leave UK advertising campaign. The origins of it are the unknown part, but Arron Banks and Richard Cook appear to be the main suspects in bringing the money to the DUP. :scratchhead:

I think we English understand that Northern Ireland will always take more out of the public purse than it puts in. Personally I don’t begrudge that money. I do think however that the English regions are neglected compared to the money lavished on London’s infrastructure. On reflection 1.6 billion which may or may not turn up in the next seven years is far too low a figure to strengthen many towns at all. Indeed it demonstrates the government has very little interest or real concern for the places “left behind” beyond this weeks voting intentions of a few labour MPs. Insulting really.

Most countries are recipients not contributors.

Therefore you're talking rubbish.
