D - Day 80 .

I get to thinking about this kind of thing often.

And every time, I just cannot think how those young men mustered the courage to do all they did. They were made of strong stuff, all of them.

The one and only reason I vote for some bunch of fetid, corrupt and feckless politicians to attempt to run this country is because tens of thousands of young men died so that I could, amongst the thousands of other freedoms we take for granted.

We owe them so much, yet we have no idea how much.

So true, the bravery is beyond belief.

I firmly believe all school kids should visit the world war sites might make a few realise the debt we owe.

Dan lives on the edge of the village. Absolutely amazing what they have achieved in the last few years. Lovely family, and an incredibly skilled restoration builder. A more humble man you will not meet. More deserving of a knighthood than most that receive them.
I think they are all hand made aren't they ? He has worked hard .

Yep, all hand made, recycled from old road signs. They have had several displays, and sent a good number to the Falklands a couple of years ago for an anniversary. Dan has put a lot of his own money into it, whilst also renovating a stunning old property from scratch. His energy is endless, and will help anybody out. He is an inspiration. I believe they have now got charity status.

I think the idea of bravery is over stated. They were young people doing as they were told being brave would have been not doing as you were told. This does not diminish the actions of these people at all. My grandfather flew in Lancasters and he talked of being very frightened. He lost his twin brother over Hannover and his other brother in Germany in April 1945. War is incredibly stupid.

My uncle was killed when his airfield was bombed early in the war. My grandparents never got over it, and were always cross when the ‘they gave their lives…’ line was quoted. They said No they didn’t ‘give’ their lives, their lives were taken from them.

This is not to belittle such men as the bomber boys who knew how bad the odds of survival were, or how very brave many actions were taken by individuals in action.

The thing that staggers me is how young these guys were.

In the Pacific, the average age of a B29 bomber captain was said to be only 21. Many U boat crews were also very young in the main.

I can't believe it's 5 years since the Dakota flypast for the 75th Anniversary. We drove over to Beachy Head to watch them fly over on their way to France. I think they numbered about 30 in the end.

It’s Remembrance Day in Australia tomorrow 25th April and to remember this day it’s back holiday as well.
We all ways go the service (when we are here)
Because my uncle was a pilot and flew Lancashers
as well being radio operator, he flew well over 30 missions
And on his last flight he volunteered to be the radio operator for an Australian crew because they was short of a radio operator and the plane was shot down over Holland ,he was 22 years old.
So when I see things like this I think of them all.
