hi
i know this is an odd one but we are looking to build up a herd and are looking to rent or lease dairy cattle can discuss if interested
never done anything like this before but seems a good idea giving those who want to look at either retiring or just stop milking
can look at purchase long term on the cattle
can look at other possibiltys open to ideas

I looked at this a couple of years ago when i was short after starting up. It's very difficult to find anyone to do it especially with anything other than grazing type cows. I kept using sexed semen and it's come right now (infact a surplus now) but it was a long costly process. It's not at all easy is it!! with such a high price for milking cows people would rather just sell and take the money. Where are you and what type of animal are you after?

you wouldn't do it per litre as too many variables. the contracts i saw were based on spring calving grazing cows and about £250 a year and the cow owner had the beef calf back or proceeds of sale. Any that died had to be paid for by the keeper on a sliding scale to age.
On a high yeilding cow it would be more like £400/500 a year and calf if you could find anyone to do it. I suspect that finance is going to be the only other option, but can be easier said than done in this day and age, Especially if your a tenant.
This is going to become a bigger problem for new entrants and those expanding as time goes on, and planning a good few years in advance will be the only way. cost of livestock now is unreal. 25 young fresh cows out of market will set you back £50k and thats why they will probably rather sell them and have the money.

i had thought of doing it, i would have leased cows to my boss, i would be looking after them so fairly happy they would be ok, the killer is tb, i would want to get them back when i want them for milking at home, (if i can ever get dad to retire n stay in the house)

Dairyco have template contracts to get you started. The figures are up to you to negotiate. Huge amount of trust involved on both sides

hi thanks for the replys im based near oxford but would consider cattle from any where to get started i had thought of a few options to present

one would be a straight rent per cow on a year rent basis in which i keep the calf

two would be a £1 per cow per day rent with the option to purchase the cattle and cattle owner has the calf

three would be a lease to purchase so agree a value per head and pay it off over 3 years with interest e.g 600 per year

ive found it realy hard as the finance that used to be in place for cattle has seemed to disappeared
the other option would to get an investor till its all payed off

Can i just give a little word of warning. on this and the other forum a few company names have come up on threads recently regarding finance companies targeting farmers. When i was trying hard to get money for cows i had spoken too all the ones that have come up but my instinct told me to keep clear. Just be careful who you get involved with.
what type of cows are you aiming for. i'd assume higher yeilders by yiour budget.

There is a shortage of milking cows and milk. people are going home from market every week with the odd cow when they need 10,20 50 or more and this has been the case for a while and will continue so as long as they keep killing cows with tb and now they are banning the fresh calvers coming in from abroad it's only getting worse. Also as long as the calf trade is roaring there will be less and less people willing to commit to the three years of heifer rearing. If i hadn't clinched my butt cheeks and stayed focused on the day when i would have bred enough to fill the tank on my own then it would have been game over. going to market and spending ten grand on five decent cows is what it takes these days but boy it's eye watering and unsustainable.

i did look at getting some heifer calfs in but its the time to get them to the point of getting a return thats the issue with them
how much would calfs be then to bring on as replacements
i was intending to buy cattle in from holland or france as they are cheaper and all tested for every bug and disease going before hand

East Sussex.
South east marts in sussex usually have a few cows/hiefers on their books for sale. Google them and give Roger Waters a call.
They may even be able to point you towards some finance.

As a new entrant into dairy some 11 years ago my advice would be build a stockbase of beef or sheep, then when the time comes sell them and buy some milking heifers in from abroad.

Forget lease or hire I wouldn't dream of sending a cow out on lease I would sooner take a draw there and then.

I'm saying build up some capital via stock,my capital was raised via selling my house.
