I've some money to spend and thinking of buying some shares in DC.
Reasonable growth over last few years - have they peaked?
Good investment or not?

Yes, made good money on Genus over the years - wouldn't buy at the mo. Steady increase over the last few years - prefer to by them on the down rather than the up!

A trader friend of mine said do not invest something you like and are involved in as you get a bit sentimental. At the minute metals and mining are worth a shout.

Sirius - bought, sold and bought again (y), one of the ones in my Mining portfolio!
Who and how do you do your trading? Do you study their accounts and profitability etc before buying?Johnson press any good? Or are these old mag and newspaper publishers going the way of the dinosaurs?

In a Share Club - lots of discussion over a few beers :wacky: before any decisions are made - plus invest solely. I don't bet on horses, but I do like a flutter with shares (y)
Hargreaves Lansdown - quite like this site for an overview. But plenty to choose from.
Keep an eye on Business Sections in various newspapers - Times, FT and Mail mostly.
Trading done with Redmayne Bentley. Again, plenty to choose from.
Never looked at Johnson Press, sorry!

You good at catching falling knives then? I would very rarely buy a share on the way down, you want to wait till it's finished falling and catch it on the way back up imo.

The missus got left some money a couple of years ago, which I wanted her to put towards a buy to let house. Instead she invested in the stock market through a broker, has averaged 13% return after commission, which I doubt she would have done on a house.

As with most calculations you can take a variety of routes to get to an answer you like!
Every couple of months I check the increase/decrease of the Footsie, and compare that with increase/decrease in value of my shares. My aim is to beat the Footsie 100.
Also at the year end I compare the change in Footsie over the 12 months, and value of my shares.
Best year from the last 15 or so was 2015. Footsie over the year had fallen around 4%, my shares had risen by 11% :joyful:
Just fun, fun, fun!!!

But are the shares you deal in actually in the FTSE100? Is the 250 not a better guide?

I think that's factored into the price now it's been clarified. The recent news was good that they've reduced the contribution by a fair chunk by using the cpi instead of rpi for pension rises. Contributions lessened by 12m quid for the next two years I think?
