Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on these dogs as a family pet. I've always had collie x retreviers in the past. But mrs jon fancies a change. Current dog is 12 years old and could do with some company

No personal experience, but deafness can be a problem in some lines.

And get a low uric acid one, which is a line that's used a pointer outcross.

Fantastic dogs had one 12 years not a problem and i bought mother in law one at the same time and lasted the same, one dog and one bitch,no deafness but not as easy to train as some but well worth the effort, great with kids and other dogs

Grew up with two. Lovely hounds, a bit batty but good dogs. Run very well with a vehicle for some decent exercise but I've noticed the dogs without nads seem to bloat out a bit.

They are prone to silicate crystals in the bladder ,,eventually they get blocked up and can't pee
Gene pool needs topping up to closely bred. Your 12 year old will not be happy having another pup/dog in his life. My advise don't and give your current dog a break till he goes.

That's what the low uric acid (pointer outcross) is all about.

Had a Dalmatian cross lab as a kid she was a beauty. Her mother was as deaf as a post and completely barmy they are great dogs mine was placid as anything at home but very highly strung mainly because her previous owner had beaten her couldn’t trust her around people wearing black. Was an interesting few months when my sister married a Jamaican guy she loved him in the end though

Very closely bred breed, I would not buy one unless I had met the breeder and seen their product for a few years in advance. Why people buy closely bred problem dogs is beyond me, cost a bomb in vets and they break your heart as often die young.

My Dad has had several. They are lovely dogs they will run all day but make really good pets however they do need lots of space. He usually gets rescue dogs but they have a good temperament and are very good ratters as well.

IIRC that's why they were bred for, running along next to horse-drawn carriages.

yes, firehouse dogs, to protect the fire gear when they were horse drawn I believe and they started to get used by others travelling with carraige. They will guard the house, I remember the postie and dust men used to really get it as they walked pat the fence. One day the dustmen poked his gloved hand through to make a fuss..... he never got that glove back!

I have never owned one. The only one I liked got 20 miles exercise a day.
Of the 3-7 others I knew they were mostly un-memorable except 2 that put me off having one ever, as in I would never own one, ever.

My father used to talk of getting a new pup before the old dog went, old dog stuck it a day then went & lived with my uncle at the end of the lane.

I missed this post earlier and it’s a very good point. We tend to have a break between dogs and then there’s no expectations of the new one. Sounds a bit clinical now I’ve written it!

Ok... after much though my wife bought the puppy. We think the older dog needs some company. I planning on keeping the dog sleeping wise out side in a kennel. Does anyone one recommend any manufacture or type of run/kenn

I've always had Dalmatians and really like them. They are great family dogs and mine have always been very relaxed.

However, they do need a lot of exercise and their hair gets everywhere! They are also annoyingly, a bit too big to stuff into a tractor easily.
