Data and telephone cable up a track.

We are about to place a duct for fibre internet to be pulled to the farm. Unfortunately when I dig the duct the old farm copper line will be destroyed. With copper phone lines going soon, what cable would be best to reconnect and would it be useful to transmit internet back up the track if we wanted to control a gate or camera at the entrance. Distance is about half a mile. I dare not put ducting too far from the track or I will surely cut it with subsoil or mole.

Copper data network cable is limited to 100m. So for your half mile you could have a fibre optic cable go back down to supply network connectivity but then power (230V) is going to be your next requirement.

I wish I had fibre from my yard to my gates. Better than using 3g/4g and cheaper to run (once in)
And I wish I had power to my gates also.
Even if it was a 3amp supply only.

1 of my gates runs off batteries and solar, connected back to yard with WiFi, which works OK except in December when there is not enough sunny days.

Could you not just install new BT cable in the duct?

Alchad
You could, but Cat5/6 etc is limited to 100 metres max, my gate is a long way down the drive.

Apparently once we have fibre to the farm we can transfer the landline phone number to VoIP. I haven't a clue how to make the transition smoothly. Conversation with BT went something along the line of
"can't dig ducting until BT are happy to transfer number"
"Can't transfer number until we have internet service provider"
"Can't have internet service provider until we have fibre"
"Can't have fibre until we have duct"

I'm off to find a hole to put in a bucket.
