David Brown 1490 won't start

My neighbour has a DB 1490 which cut out going down a slope and now won't start. We have bled it and got fuel coming out the bleed screw. Today we managed to get of fire with half a can of easy start but it would not run when we stopped spraying the easy start. It puffs out plenty of white smoke when it turns over. Would it be the pump knakered?

Is there fuel at the injectors? Slacken off the fuel feed pipes and turn the engine over. You should get fuel without air bubbles. If the lift pump is getting fuel to the injector pump , but no further it could be a knackered pump. Is the lift pump working o.k., it is driven by a rod off the cam . The rod can wear and the lift pump will not work very well.

I'd be fitting new filters to start and then bleed through to the injectors. You'll need plenty of poke in the battery and open the throttle wide before turning over. As a wise old time mechanic told me many years ago, always look at the simple things first.

Its had new filters recently as the operator is rather good at running it our of diesel. I am rather keen to get it going again as I am having to feed their cattle.

It cut out going down a slope. The fuel control mechanism in the injector pump could be stuck shut. A light tap with a hammer round the injector pump housing, particularly the top cover might free it internally. Don't know if this happens on 1490s but it certainly happens on 780s. Infuriating and finally cured by the pump partially reconditioned.

The fact there is white smoke would suggest though that some fuel is getting there. Does it just need some heat? Hold key in position for 20 seconds before moving to starter position.

We did give it some heat, just seems strange the tractor cut out going down hill under no load. Could be something sticking in the injector pump.

Some years ago I had problems with our dexta where it would stop just if running out of fuel but there was plenty in the tank and it kept doing this..... the problem was solved when I tightened the little screws on top of lift pump and when I say tightened , each screw needed very little tightening

The lift pump may be working manually but may not be with the engine turning because of that pin that ''nails'' mentioned being worn. Slacken the outlet pipe from the pump and crank it and see.
They're prone to drawing air from the suction pipe in the tank if it has corroded. Filling it to the brim should eliminate that for now. Can't remember if the outlet pipe is at the front or rear of one of the tanks. If it's at the rear,it would explain it stopping going down hill.(The cure for it is to T into the cross pipe between the two tanks.)
