That's so sad nothing more destructive than a fire
That's one way of looking at it, definitely.

Some landscapes actually NEED fire, similar to what @Crofter64 said so well about discarding anything we haven't touched in 6 months.

It makes you think: is a cause of our depression in fact to the accumulation of the wrong stuff?

We have an eating binge of sweets and chocolate when our mind misreads our cue that says "I'm lacking vitamins, go eat fruit" and so we sub it for "eat cake" as that's what's available to us.
Because we don't eat the fruit, we keep getting the signal, and we accumulate the wrong stuff.

The Aussie bush accumulated the wrong stuff too, and environmental 'stress' meant it's out of control.

How can we learn from this?

What can we afford to throw away, if our body is telling us "this is toxic, time to go live over that next mountain range" but we have a whole lifetime's accumulation of liabilities that we can't afford to discard?
So we keep wanting to "get away, get out of here"

Said this before: learn "Holistic Management", it can change everything

Wise words Pete. I was just talking to my brother about how this farm has become bogged down in a real clutter of machinery over the years as a legacy of all sorts of techniques and fads. Half the battle now is deciding which one to use and then it takes half a day to get it from the back of the shed. We have dozens of batteries and tyres perishing while doing nothing, loads of maintenance for one trick ponies that we might need one day. Dad had one grey fergy and one plough. It was plain and simple. He didn't waste time deciding what to hitch up, he just got on with it. Not saying that's the right technique now but it illustrates how simple it was.

It's like we need a reset and a massive clear out. I often feel like selling up and starting again just to clear the decks, but hopefully we can do it in a less drastic way.

I read somewhere once that the majority of people are dehydrated but for some reason, at some point, we started interpreting dehydration as being hungry. So we eat instead and get fat and dehydrated.

It occurs to me that the whole economic system here relies on making us feel inadequate. We are always told we need better this or bigger that. Kitchens, cars, sofas, teeth or whatever. The system is designed to sow nagging doubts that eventually lead to a purchase to keep the whole damn system going round and round and round in perpetual disatisfaction with all the wastage and heartache that follows.

Nobody ever put an advert on the telly saying that we are doing just fine as we are. Your kitchen is fine, your teeth are fine, your body is fine.

Same with religions. We are always supposed to be confessing something or feeling unworthy or worrying about the next step. It can be corrosive. The church service actually contains the line " we are not worthy to come to this thy table o Lord."

Well this weekend after a busy week I actually feel like I am worthy. Not perfect, for I am a man, but I feel reasonably worthy thank you very much, and so should all of us.

Stupid question alert.
What is the difference between feeling hungry and thirsty!?
As one who s weight is a constant struggle am I getting it wrong.?
To me being thirsty is a feeling of dryness in the mouth does it also include other indicators that I am not tuned into?

I agree with what you say but I would like to clarify the christian ‘ we are unworthy’ business. It is a question of humility not worthlessness. Are you not humbled to come before the creator of our Universe, all the craetures of the soil, the seas , the sky and the earth ?If your greatest sports hero( as an example) invited you to share a pint you would be humbled , so why not before the creator. And along the same lines, the creator actually wants us to come to Him. Over and over again, and not just to be polite. To me that builds me up , rather than pulling me down.Someone on this thread recently asked how often are we grateful for hot water and machines that lie waiting till we turn the ignition. Me for one. All the time. But I am also tremendously grateful and in awe of the natural world around me. Whenever I stop myself and just let go of me and my own thoughts, I almost get weak-kneed by the splendour of it all. Then I just fo back to being me with my repetitive slightly negative thoughts.

That is beyond thirst. Best way to find out, when you feel hungry. Have a pint of water and if you are still hungry in 20 mins then have food.

You are right. That is the true intended meaning but at times it's easy to feel a bit deflated about being unworthy to gather up the crumbs under the table, trusting in our own righteousness.

I can't quite remember who it was but I think it was Field Marshall Montgomery who was once asked after a certain victory if he gave thanks to God. Joking he said "No, I masterminded that one myself."

So I am not saying we should arrogantly assign all successes to our own efforts, but we should recognise our own worth and give ourselves credit where credit is due, lest we lose confidence in ourselves.

You can be dehydrated without really knowing it. I think stress and depression suppresses thirst which leads to more dehydration and more depression. It's a big problem with the elderly. The district nurse said pinch the skin on the back of your hand and if it springs back instantly you are properly hydrated. Any delay in springing back indicates dehydration, even if you don't feel thirsty. I drink too much stuff like tea coffee and alcohol which dehydrates me. It's a conscious decision and effort to drink a pint of water, but my brain works better for it. On way in to Nottingham hospital they have a big sign up saying if folks drank more water a lot of illnesses would be prevented. A simple measure easily neglected.

I wonder why does tea coffee and alcohol dehydrate you I often wonder because they are all 95% water

I think it is because your body tries to get rid of the alcohol from your system by making your kidneys work harder to pee it out and a lot of water goes out with it. Similar for the caffeine in tea and coffee. Similar to drinking salt water. It's 95% water 5% salt but your body can only get rid of the excess salt by shifting it out with lots of water, so you end up dehydrated.

I never quite got that. Thanks for explaining.I find it hard to drink water. I have to force myself. Warm is easier. The kids drink litres of it.My,parents only drank water to swallow pills. Lived into their ‘90’smwith few health issues till the very end. They never snacked. Just ate regular meals at regular hours, only started watching tv in their last years and then mostly in the evening after supper. My Dad disapproved of reading, watching tv or being distracted during meals. He said you have to concetrate to digest properly. I think regular, simple habits are what’s missing in a lot of our lives.
