Dehorning Highlands

Have a couple of pet Highlands, had to house them due to conditions so I really want to dehorn them for the sake of my other cows. Friend has suggested I shouldn't do it this time of year as he thinks it's risky due to the hole that's left and the weather being cold etc. He knows his job re cattle. I thought it was the best time of year to do it, but to be fair have only been used to conti cattle.

They should be ok. Cover the hole with lashings of stockholm tar to stop dust and dirt (and draughts) getting into the hole.

Not many flies about either, can't think of a better time of year

Highland bullocks all dehorned mid nov here every year , no problems

Thanks that's why i thought re flies but he was worried about the cold getting in.
