Just watched a programme about weird weather and a wind storm called a derecho came on. I am pretty sure we had one of these this summer, weird tube like cloud rolling along in front of some of the strongest winds I have ever encountered.

Anyone else experienced anything similar?

Have witnessed very strong "gust fronts" normally associated with squall lines, shelf clouds pre thunderstorms, notably this year. I frequent a weather forum and some of the pictures of shelf clouds this year were amazing.
Have also witnessed the destruction caused by guest fronts, lovely sunny day at the gliding club I fly at, storms were forecast and sure enough a gust front passed through mid afternoon apparently (I was airborne at the time cross country) and two gliders were destroyed, picked up like toys and smashed back onto the ground.

We get them out west from what I hear.

That lower dark portion was the beginning of a small tornado that touched down a few miles away.
