Gearbox failures are their common problems. Had two dx 90 and both had problems, now 6.50 with powermatics and it already did not have hi-low before purchasing it.

We had 2. Basic but well put together. Air cooled as you probably already know, so are fairly noisy because of no water jacket. Don’t know if the star cab was available on that model but a slightly better cab.. as long as they’ve been serviced right will go forever.
Brakes were external and separate hydraulic oil tank so very little chance of contamination to transmission oil.
Wish I still had one for straw chopper/ feeder wagon duties.
We ran one we bought second hand with large hours and took it to 17000 hours. No problems.
In the early 80s when they started becoming popular their build quality was far superior to anything else on U.K. market, up there with Fendt.

Lovely little tractors, I have a 4.30 with only 5000 hours on it, sweet as a nut. The only problem I experienced with a 4.70 I once owned was cooling, the turbo models can be harder to keep cool, you can end up having to play with the oil feed to the fan to get it to run constantly. Brake calipers can stick if they're not used for any length of time, but as they're external thats not a massive problem to fix.

Just keep the fluids topped up and the spaces around the cylinders blown out regularly and they'll go for decades.

Just general lack of TLC - get tatty easily. Keep the dry clutch and dry PTO clutch's properly adjusted, the fins & oil cooler blown out clean, and the brakes overhauled now and then and she'll go for ages. Electrics seem to need almost constant fettling on mine (dx4.50 - lights etc) Gearbox can be weak so check for noises and lack of synchro's - they have a synchro on all gears and range gears inc reverse . Should slip in like a warm knife.

Engines are never right again if allowed to overheat.

Prone to oil leaks everywhere.

Engine oil 15w-40 goes in every department inc back end & hydraulics.

Parts are scarce aftermarket and dealer prices can be eye watering.

The tractor is as good as the previous owner. If looked after will last a long time. I had one for few years which I use to drive and had no problems also had one which I use to hire and had a broken selector in the gear box and few other problems. Parts use to be very expensive but could usually come up with a generic work around.
