Diesel consumption. Better or worse?

As above, are people finding modern engines better or worse for fuel efficiency? A few days carting hay 26 a time on steep roads have averaged 5.8 litres an hour.. Old tech air-cooled deutz engine 130hp. Are the new machines capable of beating that figure? Our new 20 ton fpt excavator is way worse than our 2007 isuzu engined one.. Is it now a case of save the planet while emptying our pockets?

All the emissions crap has killed the fuel consumption that older engines used to have. Modern engine's seem to be heavier on fuel. Fair enough engines are more powerful nowadays. Best to have modern engine's with all the emissions crap removed. My diesel road vehicles are 24 yrs old with emissions crap removed, about 25% better fuel economy now. And better emissions results at MOT testing. Work that out ?????

I was talking to a trucker on the yard, had a 450, said it averaged 9.5 mpg. Used to drive a 730 and that averaged 10.5 mpg!

How do you mean modern engines are more powerful? surely 130 horse is 130 horse? Granted a 4cylinder nowadays versus my 6cyl but I doubt a modern 4 will touch this one for torque?

Youll be very surprised. Old skool turbo 6 in a mid state of tune, say 130-150 hp would be matched if not bettered on torque by a good 4cyl with vgt, 4 valve head and common rail purely because they breath alot better and the vgt turbo will be on song just off idle, the better combustion chamber will stand more fuel due to the extra oxygen without smoke.

Eg
jd 6820 6.8 litres 135hp 450ft lbs.

Jd 6r130 4.5 litres 130hp 450ft lbs.

But has the 4cyl got any startoff torque or is it going to stall when you try and start on a hill? Vario might be important?

We have two older JCB loadalls, 1994 era. Both are brilliant on fuel consumption and do everything they should.

We also have a newer 536 - 60 year 2010. Yes the ‘new’ one is much faster and 140hp rather than the 95 of the older models.

But the fuel consumption is, at a guess, about three times higher than the older models. The amount of diesel it goes through really is serious!

It all depends what previous engines were emissions tier wise and what systems were used to achieve it. Going from an engine reliant on egr to one using adblue should see fuel use improvements at the expense of adblue, partly the reason fpt engines haven't seen any real improvements for a number of years now as they adopted adblue as the main system from the start.
There are a few manufacturers tried to avoid adblue for as long as they could at the expense of poorer fuel use but eventually had to use adblue at which point they have got better.

So why have cars got massively more powerful and great on fuel? Agri stuff seems to have gone backwards? Still waiting on more peoples fuel usage on 120-130 horsepower for comparison.. This deutz can't be alone on economy?
