has any one fixed fuel prices for drier /harvest sowing need a new burner for drier and wondered if cheaper to change fuel,no need to alter tank as we have seperate available

Kero is cheaper nowadays by anything up to 10p/l and the burner should be ok on either red or kero with just a change of pump pressure and pressure jet, red needs a higher pump pressure to atomise correctly.

Thought Kero was more calorific(?) so should work out cheaper for the heat.

Been kero here for years. Cheaper cleaner burn. Would never go back to gas oil.

There was a discussion on this in here before. There has to be a certain price premium of gas oil over kero to make it worthwhile switching but I can't remember what it is.

Gas oil (35 second) has a higher energy value per litre than kero (28 second) so kero will have to be significantly cheaper. There were a few people switching to kero in 2007 or 2008 when there was a big price spike in diesel which made it worth it.

I thought kero only had to be 10% cheaper to be more economic.

There's 2 options. A TFF search, or the geeky search for the energy outputs for each on combustion to get to a price per Joule of energy for each at current market prices. Then take any other considerations like cleaner burn, lower maintenance etc from kero.

Google says gas oil has a gross calorific value of 38 MJ per litre and kero is 35 MJ per litre.

Depends how you want to run the maths, but if we say gas oil is about 42ppl currently and kero is about 31ppl then gas oil works out to be 1.1p/MJ and kero is 0.89p/MJ

So all else being equal for heating purposes using gas oil is about 25% more expensive than kero, based on the relative energy content of the fuels at today's prices.

Very useful, thank you. My drier runs on gas oil from my main yard tank so converting isn't a possibility. Puttin up a bigger dedocated drier tank is a real possibility & I'll work out the return period before I'm in a net profit from converting.
