Displaced Stomach

A whole big jar of instant coffee mixed with just enough water to make it into a liquid and then drench them with the whole lot at once. It must be the equivalent of about 100 cups of coffee and it sends their guts into spasm with the aim being that the abomasum bounces itself back into place under the rumen.

I think the quoted cure rate is only about 25% but that's not bad for something that only costs £3. I know that my last RDA op cost nearly £500 because I remembered writing a letter of complaint.
Never heard that before

Big difference between LDA and RDA, the latter which it is. Never seem much use after.
I know, the last couple have been rdas and came right eventually. Actualy the last cow we done the vet told me to shoot it, seen it 2 weeks after the op and she didn't look well. But she did fully recover and doing well

Farming since I left school 9 years ago. Farm at home with my dad. He has been farming over 40 years and never had a RDA. we've had some LDA'S but coffee has always worked on them.

I'm sure she will be ok if she's on her feet. I remeber 2 RDA operations and they both came out ok but took a while to get going. Although they can go downhill quickly. Had one on new years day with an RDA that couldn't get up for the vet. She was walking earlier on in the morning and perfect 3 day prior but her guts had turned purple and she was put down there and then as there was no point operating. Not the best of starts to the year

Neighbour told me “never let the sun go down on an rda” it’s a useful quote. Not had in the past had 3 lda’s over the years all operated on all recovered. About 3 months ago on a Sunday I said to Dad that cows got a twisted gut need to get the vet out. Vet out (not being nasty but I knew she wasn’t the best shall we say) she said not twisted gut I even asked her to double check and are you sure? Had main vet scanning on the Wednesday was an rda poor bugger struggled to eat 3 days she’s made full recovery since op 2 months ago. I’ve now got a stethoscope and can ‘ping’ them myself to check (y)

Not common here, haven't seen one for probably 5 years, you said the last two displacements you've had have been RDAs
Yes we've had 2 ops in 3 years, both last back end! Weather was so bad we should have brought dry cows in a lot earlier, lessons learned. With new accommodation we will calve close ups inside this summer potentially far offs aswell

Am I right in saying they can come in and out of displacement? Same story here, vet looked that cow that recovered eventually, I asked your sure she's not displaced? Oh no she's not displaced. Vet out again a week after, she's displaced. Bit of a wind up sometimes!

Yes very true they do but this 1 was glaringly obvious cow got fit (fat ;) ish) as I was moving her round to autumn calving, had a whopper blue bull and got up to 50l looking immense and firing on all cylinders then lost her milk over 48 hrs went ribby fortunately she’s a goer and a fighter

We have done a couple and they came OK, our vet now uses 20ml Vomend its usually for cats and dogs, instead of Buscopan

Sadly against the law. No legal way it can be used in cows...........

RDA success rates are around 60% successful with us, but they seem to go in good and bad runs. Left displacements almost all do very well.

LDA can come and go, but not my experience with a RDA. RDAs can fully twist and cut off the blood supply, that can't happen when it goes to the left due to the rumen.

I've heard anecdotes with coffee, but never used it myself. No real supportive evidence, remember many of these animals treated may recover anyway.

Is it true the blood topside of the twist goes toxic therefore when you put it right it hits the cow again so to speak?

No matter what DAs are a signal to problems. Likely poor transition. For every DA you get you have dozens of cows that didn’t transition properly but managed not to go clinical. It’s these sub clinical cows that are costing a lot of money.
100% agree. We had poor transition last back end with the poor weather. a lot more hung cleansings and problems. We live and we learn

@bovine sorry for being thick , i know what a LDA is but is a RDA the same as a "twisted gut". I had a cow kept lying down in collecting yard, kicking at stomach obviously in severe pain. Vet operated, told me twisted gut and said I was lucky to get her so soon as she would have been dead within 12 hrs. Full recovery. Was this a RDA?
