Diverting water across a track

We've made a drain and run a pipe on one side of a track that works well at taking alot of surface water away from higher up. I want to put in something diagonally across the track, a little higher up, to make sure all water is channelled to the correct side of the track and into the drain. Obviously this needs to be hard-wearing as the track is used by heavy machinery.

Concrete? Wood? Metal? Anyone got any tips.

Thanks

A gentle slope could just be graded to shed water sideways. Steeper needs a channel. Motorway barrier sunk in or deeper u channel if there is no livestock going along it.

Embed a motorway crash barrier diagonally across the track

Ultimately, it will silt up but easy (ish) to clean so long as there is no cover over it. Those grilled pre-formed concrete drains are a waste of time

I’ve used heavy duty 6in x 3in “U’ channel dug into our farm track and laid slightly at an angle to divert rainwater, works very well. I did make a small “sleeping policeman’ mound of concrete on the downstream side to help make sure the rainwater went into the channel but over the years that’s disappeared but hasn’t made much difference to the effectiveness.

The Morley agricultural foundation in Norfolk have installed several different ideas in their farm tracks to prevent run off. They had been experimenting to find the best solution. As a research organisation, I am sure they will give advice to help.

I fitted two of these sections at the bottom of my yard road, after suffering a flood after a summer torrential downpour and water getting into a grain shed. I was really looking for something a bit larger but these seem to be able to cope with a large amount of water.

Sleeping policeman or either camber road to tip water away you can also sink a piece of channel iron in at angle to take water off but will need maintenance to keep clean.

I am planning on doing this to our track, do they need concreting in or just laid in the stone?

I acquired a pallet load of these.
Haven’t used any yet but look like they won’t block with leaves and straw etc as easy as the grid type.

Hi all. Thanks for so many useful pieces of info. I've got a couple of sections of crash barrier, as it happens which I could stick end to end. Failing that, sleeping policeman sounds sensible too!

Watch for cyclists they get their wheels stuck in them 🤣
