Do companies know if you read the emails they send ?

My university dissertationf was on Social Media marketing so I've got some research behind my answer. Depends on the software they are using but they most certainly will know whether or not you open their email and if they are good at using that information and you do read them they will send you more stuff.

I delete most but sometime read the odd one. Just wondered if reading them was just encouraging them to send more

yes - you can track open rates and if links are followed, where you came from and where you went to next etc.

not a lot is secret online ! facebook and twitter probably know more about you than your wife does !!

Facebook can track what website you travel to after you leave Facebook, so they can target adverts to you better. So they probably do!

that's basic stuff - we can do that here even ;) (we don't though as have better things to do with our time !)

the way FB ,twitter , google etc track and profile you goes FAR deeper than that

Thanks for the info.
I'm not on twitter or Facebook so I'm guessing they don't know about me

Actually, they do.
Any of your friends with a smart phone will have your contact details in. Facebook get all that data. They will already know who you know.
They build 'ghost' profiles of non Facebook members from the data they glean from members smart phones.
If you was to join Facebook, the accuracy of their suggested 'people you may know' would frighten you.

That's shocking, but not that surprising really

Indeed.
It gets worse.................
Any web site that is connected to Facebook or has the Facebook 'Like' button also tracks you. Especially if you are logged into your Facebook account and research suggests you're also tracked even if not logged in. Although FB deny this.
And it's not just done by your IP address, but by your unique browser 'footprint'.
If you're on the web, you're leaving a trace.
Scary stuff.

Under t&c's you gave fb and Twitter apps access to your camera and microphone .............. Think about it !
