Do i have enough slurry to justify buying a slurry tanker ?

Hi lads, first of all il say I have a 6 bay slatted tank, 110ft long 15ft wide & 8ft deep. Have about 45 acres of silage ground. Tank gets emptied twice a year. I have my own silage outfit so have no problem in pulling power. I'm a young farmer so I'm hearing I get 60% tams for a tanker. It would be great to spread slurry strategically with the price of fert! I'm just wondering would I be silly to think about buying a tanker. (Was thinking of a 2000G with trailing shoe)

I should add, the slatted shed is 2 years old, neighbour has done it for me the last 2 years.

You get a 60% grant for a slurry tanker?
How many loads a year would it do?
Absolutely no idea as I am new to this slurry game! But as I said earlier emptied twice a year for application after silage cut. Also last year with the neighbour had to empty 9 loads out in January as slurry was reaching slats.

Firstly find out if this is DEFINITE, not just hearsay. If it`s correct then you need to find out what the cost of the kit is that you want - you`ll then have a better idea if you can afford it, or maybe you`ll find it`s better to get a contractor in when needed - do a few sums on a fag packet! ( cost of contractor twice a year for 10 years might be a figure worth thinking about, when making your decision) . Would your money make you more invested in stock or something that might make you money or save you work????? ( SORRY BORING ANSWER;))

if your getting a 60% grant its a no brainer,
a new tanker will still be worth 40% of what you paid for it in 20 yrs time if you look after it,
so consider it as a savings account.

Your silage gear will be sitting idle for roughly the same time as the tanker will be over the year. Better with as much as your own stuff as possible imo, no hanging about waiting on someone else to turn up.
If you get 60% grant then it's a no brainer although the price of machinery generally goes up when they hear the word grant.

Would have thought something like a second hand non-recessed 1600g would make sense for you, we just sold our old one in good nick for £3500. But then again if this grant is true then you'd be as well getting a new one.

Maths isn't my strongest point but 42 tanker loads@ 2000 gallons is what the pit holds from my calculations?

I think he said it was emptied 2x a year so roughly 80 loads, would be worth having his own tanker for that imo. Also could do a field of grazing now and then when it suits or maybe draw slurry from a neighbour etc. More option when you've got you're own kit.

I think I’m right when I say you have to buy the product then claim the grant.if the article in question is £10000 you have to shell that out and then wait for the grant so it’s not a matter of new tanker for £4000.some of these grants are not paid too quickly either

Yes that's correct Nick . Have to purchase outright first.then money from grant usually takes 6-8 weeks to come through (what iv been told from guys who purchased tankers)

Wouldn't be much change out of 35k for a tanker and dribble bar? A good clean second hand tanker for 10k ish would do your job for a long time. Forget about the dribble bar.
