Do we need to change our daily behaviours to protect our farms?

Hi, I’m Frank and I create behavioural-based security awareness programmes. As a farmer’s son, a service veteran, and a Chartered Security Professional, I’m confident I can offer meaningful advice to help reduce rural crime. It’s not the normal BS around expensive cameras, installing complex sensors, or bashing the police for not having the resources to visit your farm.

Have a read of the enclosed article that I wrote - tell me what you think please.

Hi Frank. Good to see you here (I believe we may have some mutual acquaintances), and great article too.

As you know, attitudes and behaviours are some of the biggest hurdles to overcome, I keep repeating - "procedures cost nothing".

A simple, proportionate, systematic approach to managing security need not be complicated, overly time consuming or expensive. Most is basic self-help, and avoiding the silly mistakes that become obvious with hindsight post incident.

A lot of security equipment purchased - especially CCTV - is often not applied appropriately, and it could be somewhat considered a "double loss" from the wasted cost of buying the equipment, and then the impact of the theft.

It is good to see a respected organisation like Optimal get involved in the rural crime issue. The private sector has a lot to offer, which the public sector does not always appreciate (but then they have also witnessed some bad examples).

Undoubtedly, behaviours need to awakened.
