But yes, serving on the PC is an excellent way of seeing that farming is understood in the community. You need to have the right attributes to be a committee person though; I wouldn't last a meeting .
When I was chairman, before the meeting I went through all the paperwork the clerk had received & decided what was worthy of attention & what should be binned.
Usually got the meeting done by 9pm

My successor, a civil servant, brought everything to the meeting & chewed through it in detail regardless of relevance. Sometimes lasted till 10.30.
Probaly lost 3 good councillers because of that. inc me

It is very, very rare that our PC meetings last longer than half an hour. I think the longest ever was 50 minutes!
The joy of living in a small parish where little ever happens 🤣

Update:
We've withdrawn our tender with FBT unsigned as don't want the hassle or men being threatened with one resident particularly aggressive
They even rang the dog warden as they thought the FYM we were tipping was a hazard to their dogs.
Even our brushing of the access road wasn't enough to stop them reporting to Highways

Their poor cars are going to get very dirty driving on that ....

Dual cabbageway was closed Easter Mon. Traffic diverted off to find its way back on again. The next junction according to sat nav was 'ours' where they have to turn right across the central reservation to get back on.
This was the pic I took. View attachment 1174221
I went to the crossroads to the left and sent 100 cars down through the village to next junction, which has a bridge over the road.
I'm expecting a mention in the parish council minutes again for ruining our village.
Last time was when the trig point 50m into the field disappeared overnight.
Those hare coarsers will steal anything for the brass in it. ;)
Have you had the trig baggers giving you merry hell?
Hope you've put it safely in your yard? 😉

I thought I did on the Sainted Isle but that seems to no longer be the case …

Recently, we tendered and won a block of 70ac on the outskirts of a village and accessed by a lane with houses off. I said to son after we’d walked the land that if we won, there would be trouble…… and yesterday we started carting FYM ready to spread before ploughing down.
And within two loads they were out stopping the drivers asking why we were using such “big tractors and trailers) and today they’ve reported to the letting agent and Highways.

Turns out the house owners are incomers and retirees

The Sainted Isle is no longer an agricultural county … just a destination for moaners and tourists.

Your county?
I think the next load of muck wouldn't have got as far as the field !

That story says 101 complaints about farm smells, and in the same period 834 complaints about barking dogs. Sub editor clearly got a pooch, as the headline is grossly misleading. Methinks this thread shows that farmers suffer the same affliction as Scousers and other wastrels; victim mentality.
It shows there’s an abundance of miserable buggers out there who like to complain about anything & everything. Most likely because of an influx of a different type of person to an area.
It would be more interesting to see how many different people all the complaints actually came from.

Farmers are among the reasons behind the complaints made to Herefordshire Council

Revealed: DOZENS of complaints about smelly Herefordshire farms

Even here, in one of the most rural of counties....
Tbf the Hereford times has become a shite media outlet that seems to enjoy stirring the pot. It was once a very rural country farmer supporting paper but the reporters just report bilge they have robbed or found on google rather than actually get out and about around the county. I wouldnt be surprised to see it fold in the near future.

I don't see any problem with complaining about something if it's justified, I'm guessing nothing happened as a result of most of the complaints in the article?
Some things are unavoidable and hopefully the council explains that to whoever complains.
Some are justified though and the result of people being arseholes, not sure why everyone else should put up with that.

I hate this arrogant 'you can't complain about me if you have a full belly' attitude. I agree farmers should be allowed to farm but some just take the p*ss.
