It does seem to me that the selling of fictional, or indeed stolen, items over eBay or other sites has become a safe haven for crims. Very rarely do you hear of prosecutions, and the sites themselves seem to care not a jot. That this guy has been caught is a complete rarity.
When buying anything on these platforms I always ask for an additional photo of a detail that cannot be taken without showing a distinctive feature already captured in another photo already published. Won't protect against stolen obviously, but at least ensures that they have the item in their possession. Google reverse image searches are also useful to see if the same photo is somewhere else on the web (stolen from another advertisement somewhere).
