Why are dealers so slow ?

We are looking to change our JCB for an ex-demo one & have had local 2 JCB dealers come & look at our old one.
(It's a 2019 542-70 so hardly a nail !)

Fed up with waiting my brother put it on marketplace (& one of the 2 reps replied with "is this still available ?)

A week later still nothing from the reps & several keen enquiries on Marketplace.

The local Manitou dealer is worse, he hasn't even been out !

Do they really want business ?

There is worse than dozy sales reps, there are sales reps so useless they can’t sell their own products on their own merits without running the competition down.
As soon as a rep starts running the competition down for one reason or another I loose all trust. (And normally don’t do a deal)
one local prolific salesman has worked for NH, JD and now fendt, each time comes with the speech how it’s better than everything else due to one reason or another and how at his last job they had so many of XYZ break down etc.

Think this is very unprofessional.did ask a rep in the past to leave after he started to slag of the competition

Mike Stokes at Johnson brothers fakenham treats every customer large or small very well....I mean...apart from anything else...he puts up with me😁

I think the problem is ,in the ops case , the reps want to find a possible home for a trade in before they bid
But that shouldn’t come at the detriment of the OP. Not his problem that they don’t want to have it on the books very long and carry the money. Although I suspect your probably bang on…

It’s one thing that gets my back up.

I had it recently with an item of machinery not an inconsiderable purchase and initially I was relived that he asked what size or features I needed.
That faded as soon as he started trashing the rivals for the details that are {in his opinion} inferior to the product he sells.

It turned me 180 and I bought the machine he was trashing and running into the ground as that man didn’t say a word about the alternatives.

Have mentioned on here in the past, when I got farm back from a contract farming arrangement about 12 years ago I sent an email one saturday evening to dealers within 40 Mile radius, was looking for a tractor, plough, powerharrow drill combination, rolls, fertiliser spreader and a few more bits and pieces.heard from one dealer in north norfolk within a couple mins and said he would call me Monday morning.that was the last I heard from him and indeed anyone I emailed.I ended up buying pretty much everything via people on here Telling me about machines in their area and the rest via farmer guide private adds.similar situation about 3 years ago when looking for drills.Claydons were great but local dealer rep was not and everyone else ignored me despite me chasing them.

Concerns me that some of them “know” more about the competitions issues than their own issues. Well let’s be honest they do know there own issues they just choose not to acknowledge them.
Best salesman I ever came across came in for a slurry pump.
his first line was “look I’m not a very good salesman, I want to make sure you have the right bit of kit, I’ve come from doing the job so I fully know where your coming from…”

he did nothing but point out the advantages and disadvantages of his bit of kit vs other bits of kit he had used, even pointed me in the right direction for a better quality supplier for parts they sourced through them. Was a breath of fresh air the rep pointing out disadvantages of his own kit!

Could give you the number of a Polish guy who we’ve sold several handlers to, straight to deal with, give you a bid there and then, money in the bank that day.

Unless you farm well on excess of a thousand acres no one cares about you

Salesmen I know in Ag tend to have an idea of who's spending and who's kicking tyres. They concentrate (perhaps wrongly) on those people and tend to filter out those who either take a lot of time to decide or screw a deal that low there's nothing in it, so not worth the hassle.
Don't want to be a dick here but how many new tractors have you bought since taking your work back in hand?
Not saying it's right, we all think we could be salesmen, I suspect the reality is a little different.
The number one question I have on this topic is, how much does an Ag salesperson make? If you are good at sales, you should be making a lot of money, or you'll change jobs.
Are they?

When you say you want to change for an ex-demo machine, do you have a machine you want to buy or are you hoping there's one available.
Perhaps they don't have one?
I wonder what was discussed when they came out to view yours.
Maybe a text to ask what's happening 🤷‍♂️

Why must you be buying a new tractor to be considered serious?

To be a good salesman they need to deal with good customers too. Who won’t mess them round for weeks on a deal, screw the deal so much there’s no money in it etc.

Id imagine a customer who knows what he wants, dosnt take weeks to ‘have a think’ and is happy to put his money where his mouth takes priority over the opposite.
There’s a reason why big estates get priority and great service, it’s because the manager isn’t spending there own money, so dosnt screw the deal down so much and don’t mess around for weeks, and spends vast quantity’s every year. They won’t bite the hand that feeds them!
