Drain detection

We have a drain blocked in cottage yard, water gets away very slowly but putting jetter pipe up from manhole only gets 20m or so before coming to a stop, don’t know where the drain runs or goes to but wondering if these pipe/cable detectors would be able to find the drain through the tarmac yard as don’t really want to start digging in the wrong place to see if we can find a collapsed pipe or some other obstruction

Work brilliantly, put collar in LDPE water pipe, add draining rod end, attach and shove up pipe. Adjustable depth measurement so you can get within a few inchs when digging.

As above. Hire a sonde when you hire the CAT. They will have an adapter for drain rods.
The easiest way is to follow it from the entry point of the drain all the way to the blockage so you know the route rather than just trying to fit it where it stops.

the other way is to send a bit of plain fence wire up the drain with the drain rods and use a standard cable finder that friendly builder / groundworker may have

Doesn’t it have to have current flowing to be found with a cat scanner? I guess you could probably connect a signal generator onto the wire?

Will work a lot better with a genny attached as it’s a positive signal. However if the wire is stuck into the earth too it will register on the cat if you are lucky enough for it to be charged with the current that is in the ground.

I know we did it once to find a collapsed drain , but I can’t remember if the guy. Attached anything to the end of the wire

Had a similar problem years ago, could see a pipe entering the inspection pit in the yard before heading under a small shed. The shed might have been small but it was on a 4 inch plinth of concrete on top of about 8 inches of concrete for the yard, so digging that lot up was out. Looked into hiring a CAT detector, sonde etc but the price was into hundreds of pounds to find a few metres of pipe. One company said I'd have to go on a course before using their equipment etc.Chap I spoke to about using a ferret locator didn't think it would work through reinforced concrete. Did eventually find the other end by digging out in the field on the far side and finding small pieces of old clay pipe, but thought afterwards that if I had used a mechanics stethoscope with water being pumped into the drain that may have worked to find the direction of the drain. Couldn't use dowsing rods as the shed was full of equipment, though it should work if water is flowing.
Best of luck.
